State Question 836 for Voter Inclusion

On September 16, 2025, the Oklahoma Supreme Court unanimously (8-0) ruled that State Question 836, a citizen-initiative to open primaries to all voters, regardless of party affiliation, may move forward.

My Take on why this matters:

It’s a move toward voter inclusion: giving independents and others outside the major parties a voice.

It challenges institutional control of parties, which often gatekeep via closed primaries.

It may shift how campaigns are run — candidates might need to appeal to broader electorates earlier (since you’d be competing not just within your party, but against anyone in the primary).

Ultimately, though, it signals Oklahoma is wrestling with how modern primaries should work, fairness in representation, and whether party affiliation should limit democratic participation.
